Croatian footballer Nikola Porkivac dies in a traffic accident
He played for various clubs, including Dinamo Zagreb, Monaco, Red Bull Salzburg, and Rijeka, and appeared in 15 matches for the Croatian national team.
Footballer Nikola Pokrivac, a former member of the Croatian national team and former Dinamo player, has died unexpectedly at the age of 39 in a serious traffic accident, Croatian media reported Saturday.
According to police sources, Pokrivac and another person died Friday night in a collision involving four vehicles near Karlovac, about 50 kilometers south of Zagreb, while three other people were injured.
Police have opened an investigation to clarify the cause of the accident, according to the sports website Sportske Novosti.
After beginning his football career with Varteks in 2004, Pokrivac played for various teams, including Dinamo Zagreb, Monaco, Red Bull Salzburg, and Rijeka, and appeared in 15 matches for the Croatian national team.
In 2015, he suffered a serious illness from which he recovered to the point of being able to return to first-division football. The club he was playing for at the time of his death is Vojnic, a fourth-division club.
Dinamo reported receiving the news of his death with great sadness and disbelief.
“Nikola will forever remain part of the Dinamo family: as a talented midfielder, a fighter on the pitch, and a man with a big heart. He played 69 times for the Blues and participated in four league titles and three Champions Cups,” Dinamo wrote on social media X.
Red Bull Salzburg also expressed its sadness and condolences to the deceased’s family.
“We mourn the loss of our former player Nikola Pokrivac, who tragically passed away in a car accident. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in peace, Nikola,” the Austrian team said on its website.

Vikings Rookie Khyree Jackson Among 3 Killed in Crash
Vikings rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson was killed in a car crash, his agent told ESPN.
Minnesota Vikings rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson and two former college players were killed in a car crash overnight, according to Maryland State Police. Jackson was 24 years old.

Jackson died after a three-car crash that occurred at 3:14 a.m. Saturday in Prince George’s County, according to police. Isaiah Hazel and Anthony Lytton Jr., two former players who were Jackson’s high school teammates, also died in the crash, police reported.
Hazel, 23, played at Maryland and Charlotte, while Lytton, 24, played at Florida State and Penn State.
Police said Hazel was driving a Dodge Charger with Jackson in the passenger seat when their car was struck by an Infiniti Q50 that was attempting to change lanes at high speed. The Charger went off the road and struck several trees.
According to police, Jackson and Hazel were pronounced dead at the scene, while Lytton was transported to a hospital before being pronounced dead by hospital staff.
Neither the driver of the Infiniti Q50 nor her two passengers nor the driver of the third vehicle were injured. Investigators believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash, police said, adding that charges are pending.
Jackson was selected by the Vikings in the fourth round of this year’s draft and was considered a contender to start at cornerback.
“We are devastated by the news of Khyree Jackson’s death following a late-night vehicle accident,” the Vikings said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with Khyree’s family, friends, teammates, coaches, as well as all the victims of this tragic accident.”
Jackson played his final season of college football at Oregon, and Ducks coach Dan Lanning was among those who paid tribute to Jackson on social media.
He was selected first-team all-Pac-12 by Oregon in 2023. Before joining the Ducks, Jackson played two seasons at Alabama under coach Nick Saban. He had quit football at one point after high school before returning to the sport at a community college and rising to the Division I level.
“I am absolutely devastated by this news,” Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said in a statement. “Khyree brought an infectious energy to our facility and our team. His confidence and engaging personality immediately drew his teammates to him. In our short time together, it was evident that Khyree was going to become a tremendous professional football player, but what was more impressive was his desire to become the best person he could be for his family and those around him. I have no words. My heart goes out to Khyree’s family, friends, teammates, and coaches.”
